SECRET WARS - 1st Leg Q-Final Battle in London Town

Team Dublin hit the sky's and jetted over to LDN for the wkend to kick off the 1st Leg Q-Final battle against our old friends and pioneers of Secret Wars....

ROUND 1:

Right game faces on - and to The Book Club we headed for what turned out to be a very sweaty and packed affair of Irish and English supporters cheering on both teams. The battle ended up being quite the experience with both teams literally having equal amounts of people screaming to take the decibel reader vote. However in the end Riff, Alfa and Teck pulled out a piece to take a guest judge and the all important home crowd vote - FINAL SCORE 2-1 = London

Overall fun night and many thanks to the amount of Irish people that turned out to support us....we ll get them next time!

Round 2:

Firstly a big shout out to everyone that came to this battle! We decided to switch it up with a venue change so it was great to see some familiar AND the many new faces that showed. Having already lost 2-1 away meant that we needed either 3-0 to advance to the semi or 2-1 to draw. What happened next was a FIRST in Secret Wars history! Both London & Dublin pulled out all the stops in deliver 2 sick pieces that saw a guest judge and crowd vote going Dublin's way & the final guest judge vote going London s way. TIE BREAKER it went.....and this was no ordinary tie breaker battle to go through to the Semi.

The Secret Wars Euro League is coming to an end - The live art battle which boasted 17 European cities has only a few left and guess what....Southampton are still in it!!

Come on Southampton!!!!
Being the only team in the whole competition to lose only one battle, means team Southampton is a real threat and a serious contender to go all the way!! I think it was Samuel Jackson that said in the movie Coach Carter, "Just because we deserve to win, doesn't mean they're going to let us"! Great film and wise words.

So we need all the support we can get!! Remember as well as the judges votes, there's a crowd vote, which is where you guys come in!

There's some serious artistic talent on show, Amsterdam I bringing the big guns. You only have to google these names to get a load of stats and images - Mr K, Wayne Horse, Sjoco Sjon, Via Via, Zender and Chaz from the infamous London Police!!

But Southampton are more than capable of taking them out. Led by team Captain Hicks 54 (www.flickr.com/hicks54), Zadok, Gustav, Mr Dead, Sobac and Smurph are ready and waiting.

We're moving the event from our usual Thursday night slot to a Saturday night - SATURDAY 25TH SEPTEMBER!!

We're also changing the venue - The Monument Gallery -

The historic Bargate Monument, in central Southampton is run by arts organization 'a space'. The organisation strives to provide opportunities for emerging artists and audiences in
Southampton and the surrounding regions to make and engage with
high quality artistic experiences.

So just to clarify, that big castle in the middle of town, is a Gallery and YES you can go inside it. Due to the size, space is very limited, so make sure you arrive nice and early to avoid any kind of heartbreak.

A much needed blog from our little Irish Tour abroad in Paris...

The French Battle:

This was a strange but interesting battle. Strange because it wasn't your average Secret Wars venue but interesting from the point of view that it was different. The setting for this French encounter was in this chilled out lounge/cafe esque bar called Dune. That being said- a battle is a battle no matter where its held so Team Dublin was ready for anything. Armed with Irish supporters from Dublin, Geneva, and other parts of France, the venue seemed to feel more like home. Nevertheless, we were in Paris and the French were just as prepared. After the introductory Secret Wars brief (one in English, & one in French) the battle was underway. Paris took the early lead by busting out big characters while Dublin were still mapping out the white wall of the venue. Being the 1st battle of the League to be streamed live online (courtesy of the venue) the whole internet world were watching Dublin loose it. However- 30 mins on & Dublin were full steam ahead busting out some big bold lines. Alas Team Paris watched as Dublin made up a lot of wall space, bringing the battle to a proper head to head fight. In the end Paris could do nothing but to add in some of the Team Dublin's characters into their Ghost Busters themed piece called "Dublin Busters" . A great piece- however Dublin did they're research & created a worthy piece based on the smell off the French Metro underground which incorporated a drunk Mickey Mouse and a sick ass Quasimodo. The piece was a bold move- but won over not just the French & Irish supporters but the two guest judges to take the final scores 3-0. A shock to all including the French Team- but thats Secret Wars I guess. Big up to all the boys in Team Paris and Jim they're manager. A shout out to our sponsors Edding, Reebok, Flip & Casio G-Shock who also came down to support. Lastly a massive thanks to our Irish supports that showed up- SAFE!

Southampton have been cruising through with two consecutive victories against Paris and Barcelona. Southampton now face one of their toughest challenges against a team that has taken a point away from Barcelona and beaten team Paris 3-0 away from home!!

So make sure you come down as Secret Wars introduces 'A clash of the titans' style battle.

The rules are simple, artists have 90 minutes to paint using black Edding paint pens on a white backdrop, 3 artists against 3 and no sketches allowed!!

We've also got Polar Bear back down after he absolutely smashed it during the Barcelona battle...so if you missed out, here's another chance to see this amazing lyricist and poet perform live on stage!!

Team Dublin away tour diary 1: BARCELONA

Hola...so I'm gonna put it out there and say that I think we've just found our new home away from home. From the moment we stepped off the plane we were like "hell ya! Barcelona baby!" (Actually no one really said that- I lied just there). Anyway I don't think we have ever travelled to a host city and received such a big welcome as we did from the peeps we'd be battling against. Chino (Barca Manager) and the rest of Secret Wars Barcelona are coolest bunch of lads. These guys didn't just want to have a battle- they wanted to throw a party and to make us feel apart of it & their family as much as possible. Hugs all around made it special. Having done the whole site seeing buzz during the day we got set for a Secret Wars pre party in probably the nicest tapas restaurant that our boy Chino hooked up called Bar Pepino. No joke...please if anyone is reading this hit up that spot! You won't be disappointed. All this kicked off @ 9pm and went on till 12am...before our head to head clash in The Apolo.

WELCOME INTO THE MOST INSANE BATTLE SO FAR IN THE LEAGUE!!

As far as first impressions go- um ya you could say that the Barcelona battle was about average and that maybe 1 or 2 people showed up. I mean it wasn't as if a massive crowd of say 1200 people would want to come...would they?!

CORRECT ladies & gentlemen (senoras y senores) - 1200 crazy peeps queued for 30min outside the venue and around the corner for an old fashion Secret Wars showdown that kicked off @ 1.30am....on a Thursday night! When you have these many people outside, waiting to pack out an old Spanish theatre -you know this is gonna be a good night regardless of the results.

When the G-Shock clock hit 1.30am the battle was on like Donkey Kong. Team Dublin had they're Edding pens on and Team Barcelona had they're black pens, white pens and sketches on (A school boy error in the Secret Wars handbook). Throughout the night the crowd were insane just vibin......I suppose this wasn't your regular battle right? this was Barcelona throwing a party that had local and international Dj's spinning along with sick B-Boys doing there thing. Chino and co. went full out on this one- even the host was bad ass. Being pimped to the max in bling wearing a banging 70's getup has respect written in my books for sure. As the night went on both teams really pulled through showing equal skill on two well rounded compositions. When it came time to vote Dublin knocked up a guest judge putting us in the lead. Next up was the crowd vote which got super hazy and had to be done 4 times. The final crowd vote went to the home team Barcelona which we were super bummed. Lastly it came down to one last guest judge who was swayed to Barca's battle piece to take the lead and win 2-1. As disappointed as we were losing..the night was far from over. I mean your in Barcelona and Benji Boko was about to hit the stage. Lets just say I've censored a lot of the finner details, but like I said regardless of the result everyone partied hard till the early hours. This is a battle Team Dublin will not forget..NOT for losing but for having an incredible 24 hrs.

MUCHO MUCHO respect to you Chino and everyone in the Barcelona camp. For putting on the first ever official Secret Wars battle in Barcelona we tip our hats to you big time! Secret Wars is alive in Barca and we will be coming back for sure. Next time we meet however will be in Dublin Town....We're ready are you?

There was a lot of pressure on Southampton to perform against one of the tournaments favourite – Barcelona. Added to Group 3 at the last minute, there were high expectations for the visitors to walk away with a victory.
The judges were carefully chosen to make sure nobody could accuse the home team of cheating. Three creative designers from ‘Sifer Design’ who are based in Portsmouth (If anyone is going to vote against Southampton, it’ll be someone from Pompey, local rivals!)

The second judge was Stephen Stafford, a reporter from the BBC, who’s completely neutral and has no ties to Southampton. Right, fair judges, selected, lets get the show on the road.
Southampton’s team on the night was made up of team captain Hicks 54, Zadok and Mr Dead. The guys had only met the night before and did really well to pull it together.
Polar Bear was the host for the night and I’m sure everyone that was there will agree, absolutely smashed it. He had the crowd hooked!

Both teams worked really hard and I think the Barcelona piece was great. But, everyone needs to remember that it’s not just about whether a team can draw. In Barcelona’s defence this was their first battle and maybe they didn’t grasp the concept. The Southampton team had two veterans and Mr Dead knew all about SW, so it was no surprise, to me at least that, Southampton seemed to edge ahead of Barca.

Sifer Design were first up to judge and they had a difficult time choosing a team. They loved Barcelona’s tattoo style, but it was Southampton’s bold lines and character designs that won them over. First point goes to SOUTHAMPTON!!
Next up, the crowd, Southampton were up first and hit a 1.17 on the decibel reader. Traditionally the last team to go always gets the highest scream…Barcelona scored, 1.16!! Southampton gain a second point.
Last judge on the night was Stephen Stafford, who was reporting on the event. He was amazed at both pieces and surprised they managed to produce the work in 90 minutes!! Again, he found it tough to choose a winner, but similar to Sifer, he preferred the bold lines and the sense of humour that came across in the Southampton piece…SOUTHAMPTON 3-0

A Big thanks to everyone who came down to support the artists. It was a great night!! Southampton are now the first team to win two battles in a row! Bring on the away matches, I say! We’re ready!

Hicks 54 doing his bit for Charity

Whilst other teams prepared sketches and got ready to travel, Hicks spent his time whipping up a banging pair of custom Reeboks to be auctioned off in aid of Charity. The event was Style Society, held at the Orange Rooms, Southampton. A night celebrating all things creative. Run by Sarah Wade and Sophie Penn, the night was a huge success. The proceeds from the auction went to Oxfam and if that wasn't enough, Hicks found time to paint a piece ready to greet the Barcelona team this Sunday!!

DUB - CPH revisited, the HC Andersen View

It's been 996 years since the battle of Clontarf and the Irish Viking Age ended.. About time we came back and checked up on you guys!

Battle ready as always, one of our guys got held up by airport security for trying to board the plane carrying a knife that Crocodile Dundee definitely would've labelled a noyffe.. Caught the flight anyway and off we went - 2 days of drinking, art, pizza and more drinking!

At the eve of the battle we went out looking for a good spot to prepare ourselves and the battle piece in.. Imagine our surprise when we spotted the Dublin team doing exactly this in a pub window! Who could've resisted having a quick sneak-peak?! Not team Copenhagen anyway..
Strengthened by our newfound advantage we found our own more low-key pub and began working.
Simple concepts are often the most effective in Secret Wars. Basically we had a Danish sailor urinating into a pot surrounded by happy leprechauns. The pee being the rainbow that marks where to find the pot of gold...but in this case it was the "Potty O' Gold"! Couldn't resist adding the punchline "Probably the Best Piss in the World" referencing the famous Danish beer and it's constant ad campaigns all over the world!

Time for battle!
Team Copenhagen started strongly and halfway through the difference in speed between the two teams was obvious. The Danish piece was almost ready for judgment while the Irish wall was still very very white.. As the all important details were added in the end the Dubliners surprisingly got going and finished very strongly.

Both teams had done well but I have to say that we were feeling pretty confident snatching both the judges votes. Superior COMPOSITION, ENERGY and PUNCHLINE should have given Team Copenhagen the win!! (if you ask me, captain of Team CPH and perhaps not 100% objective)

All in all, despite losing, it was a great night! The venue was quirky but perfect, ram packed with enthusiastic Secret Wars fans and the atmosphere was super. We definitely look forward to getting our revenge at the home match this summer!

Big thanks to Andy the organizer for setting it all up - massive effort that created a massive event! Thanks to Lars for being his regular mastermind-self back home!

..and a massive Go Raibh Maith Agaibh to the people of Dublin for showing us a great time!!

And We're off!

Welcome to the 1st battle of the new Euro League to hit Dublin city....The venue was ready, the crowd was ready, the pens and paint were ready, the Kaboogie DJs were ready, Team Dublin was ready....all we needed was some crazy Danes? and boy did they come & party.

Before I get into this...let me just say when you have the cops making a guest appearance due to noise complaints you know your at the right party!

Team Copenhagen could probably give some of the Irish drinkers a run for their money. Dan (Monorex & Secret Wars Scandinavia) plus 3 top secret Danish artists who I shall identify only as artist 1, artist 2 & artist 3 hit Dublin hard. Drinking aside- the boys busted out a great piece titled “Potty O Gold” and made reference to a drink that will remain anonymous inking the tagline “Probably the best piss in the world”...Having someone piss into a pot of gold was always gonna stun the Irish crowd!

Team Dublin (Redmonk, Frizelle & Mick Minogue) brought they‘re game & battled with skill to hit home a piece consisting of a sick Saint Patrick character, a sexy ass Mermaid and a bashed Viking. Don‘ t get me wrong- there was definitely love in the air, but both teams wanted to win bad. Titling their piece “Probably the snakiest style in the world”..... showed the Danes that Dublin meant business.

A night that is rammed packed with people spilling out into the car park venue and queues outside trying to get in was always gonna be messy! By the end of the 90mins both teams showed worthy pieces but victory came to Dublin who won over the crowd and the 2 guest judges to take it 3-0.

Next time we meet the Danes will be on their home turf....Team Dublin get ready.

Southampton Beat Paris 3 - 0!

I wasn't on hand for this battle. It was the opening of the Secret Wars Euro League tournament and the promotion was hit hard from every angle, which is probably why there was such a good turn out.

This report might come across one sided, but I'm sure the Paris guys will fill in the blanks. The Southampton team have named themselves 'The Titanics' making sure they stayed afloat for the next voyage against Barcelona on Sunday 21st March @ Orange Rooms Southampton (shameless plug)

The judges were Pascal (Lecturer at Solent Uni) and Christian (Soul Cellar manager and art graduate) both opting for the home side along with the crowd. A well deserved 3 points!

Ya, maybe we're still a bunch of newbies in the eyes of many established cities, but we have yet to lose a battle having defeated the mighty London Team. When I say Southampton's got some serious talent, I'm not just saying that because I was born and bred there. If anything that makes me its biggest critic. Things don't improve if you're constantly lying through your teeth and I can hand on heart say that Southampton has what it takes to win this.

I'm going to start at the beginning, All of the other cities, please take notes I'm going to give you all the information you need on us, not because I'm a nice guy. Incidentally I am, but because I honestly don't think it's going to help you. Right, my impression of a cocky football coach is over...time to get serious.

EUROPEAN LEAGUE TEAM SERIES - 2010

SECRET WARS IS RE FORMATTING AND ROLLING INTO 2010 WITH A DIFFERENT KIND OF BATTLE PLAN!

After 3 and a half years of single battle series locally in over 20 countries, we have decided to try something different and potentially more exciting for 2010... Introducing the Secret Wars EURO LEAGUE!

"When we started Secret Wars 3 years ago, it was influenced heavily by various things from the Marvel comic, to Warriors and Fight Club. After experiencing the team battles around the World and seeing the benefits of this compared to the singles battles, we decided on trying it as a complete 6-8 month series!"

"I have noticed the crowds are more vocal and patriotic towards team battles - there seems to be more at stake and I love watching the artists free-styling alongside each other.... You never know what will come out the other end!" Terry Guy (Founder of Monorex and Secret Wars)

The rules are the same but the structure of the competition and dynamics of the battle are slightly different - see below for details.

1st Round - Group league qualifiers

Four groups of 4 teams with the top two teams qualifying
Rather than a knockout cup comp, we have decided to make this a little more interesting and maybe fairer - Each game will be a league match with each judge vote and crowd vote worth a point (so 3 points available per battle)!
Each team will play home and away against the others in their group

Quarter finals

With the top two teams going through from each group, we will be left with 8 teams.

The winner of GROUP A will play the 2nd place of GROUP B and the winner of GROUP B will play the runners up of GROUP A...and so on!

These will be played over a two leg format with away counting for double if a tie occurs.

Q-final 1

GROUP 1 WINNER vs. GROUP 2 RUNNER UP

Q-final 2

GROUP 2 WINNER vs. GROUP 1 RUNNER UP

Q-final 3
GROUP 3 WINNER vs. GROUP 4 RUNNER UP

Q-final 4
GROUP 4 WINNER vs. GROUP 3 RUNNER UP

Semi finals

These will be played over a two leg format with away counting for double if a tie occurs.

Q-FINAL 1 WINNER vs. Q-FINAL 3 WINNER

Q-FINAL 2 WINNER vs. Q-FINAL 4 WINNER

GRAND FINAL

This will be hosted at a neutral venue, TBC nearer the time

RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR THE COMPETITION

On the night

90 minutes on the Casio battle clock
Only black edding markers and black acrylic paint can be used to paint
No other markers can be used
No pencils / sketches should be on stage or used (loose rule)
Each team has to stay within the allocated space, if they creep over then there will be a 1 point deduction
All teams are made up of 6 selected artists, but only 3 can travel and battle per event (tactical reasons)
Battles are judged by 2 nominated and neutral guest judges + crowd vote

Competition

The competition starts as a 4 grouped league concept
There is a point gained for every vote (3 points in total available for each battle)
The top two teams from each group will go through into the Q-finals
If for some reason there is a draw of points with two teams in second place, then we will favour and send through the team with more away points
Each team will play each other twice (home & away)
The Q-finals / S finals will all be based on (home and away) knockout games
The final will be held in a neutral city (preferred venue will be London / Birmingham)
The grand final will be judged by an extra 2 judges, making 5 in total
